Congratulations to the first year basketball team who are now North East Regional Champions and successfully secured a place in the All Ireland basketball championships.

The Minor C league began with four games against schools from the North East region. Loreto won their first game against St Louis Carrickmacross with a score of 58-11, this display of skill was the start of an undefeated journey to the regional finals. The next game against St. Louis Dundalk was an astonishing 78-18 win – a fantastic play by the girls, followed by a 73-0 win over Monaghan Collegiate. The final playoff game against Castleblaney College sealed the girls position at the top of the table with a 41-13 win.  We then travelled to Dunboyne for the regional semi-final against St Peters College, this proved to be a tougher game for our girls however they were able to hold onto their title and finished with a 28-12 win.

The regional final in Dundalk IT was our next trip. As expected, students were nervous starting off with their first big final but got through the game with the encouragement of our captain for the day Jane Lowry who displayed some excellent leadership skills throughout. We entered the match as clear favourites based on our high scoring wins throughout the tournament and found ourselves once again facing St Louis Carrickmacross in the final. After previously winning with a 40 point margin we had hoped to be as successful again but were focused and ready to face the challenging game ahead. The first quarter was a low scoring one which seen us fall behind by 2 points, thankfully in the second quarter we picked up and finished the end of the first half with a 16-8 lead. The third quarter was our biggest challenge with a nail biting wait for a score from Loreto, St Louis team had shown massive signs of improvements from our first game which made harder work for Loreto girls. Eventually by the final quarter the girls had regained their confidence and strength and finished as North East Regional Champions with a 28-18 win.

After a trophy presentation and many celebrations with supporters we returned in positive spirits to school and now the team are getting geared up for the all- Ireland playoffs which will take place in Colaiste Muire, Ennis on April 25th.

We wish all the players the best of luck and look forward to the All-Ireland journey that faces us. Congratulations again to the team Emma Comiskey, Orla McCabe, Saoirse Caffrey, Leah Bartley, Katie Lynch, Maeve Young, Ava Leddy, Jane Lowry, Molly-Mai O’ Meara, Grainne Caffrey, Deirbhile Lynch, Aoife Baker, Jessica Buckley and Rebecca Walsh.
