Two Transition Year students, Emma McDwyer and Claire Young recently participated in the BT Young Scientist and Technology competition 2017.

“Is Wine the New Tea?” is a project on the drinking habits of working women aged thirty to sixty. The girls became interesting in this topic after they discovered that there has been an increase in liver cirrhosis among women in their thirties and forties in recent years. They realised that there is a hidden problem of women between the ages of thirty and forty consuming excess alcohol in the comfort of their homes. Their project highlights the “normalisation” of alcohol and aims to raise awareness about the health problems that long-term alcohol consumption can lead to. Emma and Claire received an award for their display in the competition. By Emma McDwyer, TY student.
