On Tuesday the 6th of October 29 students from Loreto Cavan travelled to St Brigid’s Athletic Club in Co. Meath to take part in the Geraldine Dolan Memorial Schools Cross Country meeting. It was a huge event with over 450 athletes from 17 different schools taking part. The athletes from Loreto Cavan put in a very strong performance with 2 podium finishes in the individual events and 3 podium finishes in the team events.
Maegan McGivney from 2nd Yr took third place overall in the Junior girls event while Enya Kiernan produced a strong run to finish 3rd in the Intermediate girls race. The Minor team was made up of all 1st year students and they all ran an excellent race to take third place in the team event. The team was led home by Mary Kate Gannon, Bevan McCaffrey, Olivia Murphy and Niamh O’Reilly. In the Junior event the Loreto team ran a brilliant race to finish level in 1st place with Loreto Mullingar but they were awarded 2nd place after a finishing places countback. The team was as follows, Maegan McGivney, Eimear Rudden, Brianna Smith and Blathnaid O’Reilly. In the Intermediate team event the Loreto Cavan team led by Enya Kiernan, Leah Smith and Emily Boylan finished an excellent third place over all. In the overall competition Loreto Cavan placed in a very impressive 7th place out of 17 schools. This was an excellent overall finish for the Loreto Cavan team considering that they were competing against co-educational schools who were scoring points in both boys and girls races. Well done to all involved and the team are now looking forward to taking part in the Cavan Schools Cross Country. A special thanks must also go to Floods Coaches our new athletics kit sponsors, who provided the school with 20 brand new singlets for the coming year. Below are photos of our teams who represented the school on the day.
