It is true to say that Loreto College students and their teachers have been very busy over this past few months, not only with their studies, but also with their sporting activities. See below for an update!
Senior Gaelic Football
The Senior Gaelic football team had their first Ulster game against Our Lady’s Castleblaney. The team came away with a very good win, final score of 7-9 to 6-4. On 7th November the team played their second group game overcoming Mount Lourdes, Enniskillen on a score line of 4-12 to 0-5 securing their Quarter Final place. A good start to the Ulster Championship.
U16 Gaelic Football
The U16 football team also had a very good start to their Ulster Championship winning out their group. They beat St. Louis, Carrickmacross with a final score of 8-23 to 3 points and St Ciaran’s, Ballygawley last years All Ireland Champions with a result of 5-17 to 4-7. This has qualified the team to the Ulster quarter final.
1st year Gaelic Football
40 first years competed in the Loreto Schools Gaelic Football blitz last Thursday at Kilmacud Crokes GAA grounds in Leopardstown. They proved to be the best teams on the winning with both teams winning the four games each that they played. Other Loreto schools that participated were Foxrock, Crumlin, Dalkey, St. Stephen’s Green, Navan and Swords. The first years are competing in the Cavan Schools U14 blitz today at the 3G. We look forward to hearing how they get on in this competition.
Cavan Schools League Senior & U-16
We have played two of our Cavan Schools League Senior games against St. Clares Ballyjamesduff and Breifne College. We lost both but have lots more to play so are still in with a good chance of doing well. In the U-16 competition we played our opening game against St Mogue’s, Bawnboy and were victorious on a scorline of 4-8 to 2-6.
The Senior Camogie team have one game in their Ulster League but unfortunately lost out by two points. They are playing their second game today against Dungannon, hopefully they will have some better luck today.
This year we have participated in two cross country events thus far and we were quiet successful at both. The first event was the Geraldine Dolan Memorial Cross Country Meet which took place at St. Brigid’s AC. We came 9th overall out of over twenty co-educational schools. We also had a few individual first, seconds and thirds. We also attended the Cavan Schools Cross Country Meet at the start of October. Again we had a number of medals back to school with us. The E District and Ulster Cross Country Events will be coming up in the New Year.
The 1st and 2nd year basketball teams are having their trial matches at the moment to make the North East League School team. Both teams will begin their competitive games in January.
The Inter Schools equestrian show jumping team have begun training under their new Chef d’Equipe and will have their first competition of the year in Cavan Equestrian Centre on the 29th of November. The Inter Schools Hunter Trials will take place in Cootehill on the 16th of November with 3 students representing the school.
