Aishling Brady and Emma Brady write on behalf of the Student Council:
Wednesday April 9th, the Student Council, along with our liaison teacher Mrs A Cassidy, were thrilled to be able to presented two cheques to charity after their valiant efforts this year to raise vital funds for both St Christopher’s Hospice in Cavan and Loreto Rumbek in South Sudan.
In fundraising for Lorteo Rumbek, a Loreto sister school in South Sudan, the Student Council organised ‘Rumbek Day’ in Loreto Cavan. Each student was asked to wear a jumper in any of the Rumbek colours- red, blue, yellow, green, black or white. Students also wore ribbons and face paints. Each student contributed €2 to this event. Prizes were given to the most creative member of each year. In conjunction with raising these funds, students and staff were also informed about the school in Rumbek and the poverty fighting work that is done each day there to give a fundamental education to many young women.
Many other fundraising endeavours also took place throughout the year to allow the student council to donate money to local charity St Christopher’s Hospice, a practise which has been done by the Student Council for many years. To do so, the Student Council ran a Cake Sale, a Christmas Card Competition and a Monster Raffle.
A sum of €1100 was presented to Principal Ms McGarvey who accepted the cheque on behalf of Loreto Rumbek. Meanwhile, €1200 was presented to Mr Paddy Grogan who accepted the cheque on behalf of St Christopher’s Hospice. The Student Council will undoubtedly continue to fundraise in the months and years ahead.
They are extremely proud of their fundraising to date and also realise that without the student body supporting their efforts, these presentations would not be possible. To all the students, staff and members from the wider community who have supported and encouraged the Student Council throughout the years – thank you one and all.
